July 1st 2009 Single Mothers can now Go to College by Applying for Financial Aid

In the pursuit of a higher education, there may be doubt as to what a single mother can accomplish with limited resources. If you ask for help at a college office of the registrar, they will point you in the right direction on where to look for financial help. There are scholarships for single mothers available from private foundations for those unfortunate individuals who would fall into the category of the battered or abused. These are offered to promote and encourage a better life that is financially independent free of domestic violence. The SUNSHINE Lady Foundation is one example. Another avenue of financial assistance might be government assistance for single mothers returning to school.

If you are a single mother and your children are still young, an organization that could help is the Women’s Independence Scholarship Program. This organization offers scholarships for single mothers going further to the assistance with childcare. Single mothers who need financial assistance can also apply for loans for single mothers from the government which can be used to supplement their scholarships. If you choose to teach after you complete your education, namely in a low-income area, you can possibly have your loan completely or partially forgiven. Single mothers don’t have to worry about a payment plan for federal grants as they are gifts not loans. As most federal programs, there must be need established to qualify. You could also try to get a grant from a particular school, and to do so you need to apply directly at the location.
